School Committee Elections.

Napier.

There was only a small attendance at tho meeting of householders in the Theatre Royal last night. No interest whatever was taken in the proceedings, and there waa no ballot, as it was with diffioulty anyone could be got to stand beyond the five or bis: who it was understood were to be nominated. Mr Cohen was voted to the chair, an_ called upon the seoretary, Mr Hodgson, to read the f allowing ANNUAL EEPOET. The teaching staff remains the same aa when your Committee entered office, and is highly satisfactory. The congratulationa of the Committee were forwarded ta tnem on the results of the Inspector's examinaturns. The attendance continues Steadily t i increase, and thanks are due to the police I for their assistance in suppressing truant playing. r 6

Some important alterations have been made to th. class-rooms in the main school at the suggestion of your Committee, whioh are found to be very advantageous, and should prove beneficial to health. The Hastings street sohool building has been enlarged which the increased attendance warranted, and all schools are now in good working order. Rich-rdsoa's "Temperance Lesson Book" has been introduced as an additional reader into the school, of which the oommittes b_g_ toaokn.wledge the receipt of 14 dozen plied gratuitously. Thanks are also tendered to several subscribers towards the purchase __ of a harmonium for the Hastings street " J----school. Mr A. Levi kindly examined the eye-sight of the scholars, and furnished a report of much value to the committee.

The Board of Education has been approached by your committee with the view of providing a proper set of science apparatus for circulation amongst the various schools iv tho district, in order that the syllabus, as far as that subject is concerned may be as complete as possible. The matteis still under the consideration of the Board A report on the possibility of establishing a fife and drum band in connection with the schools has been held over for the incoming Committee's consideration.

Fifteen Committee meetings have been held during tho year, tho attendance being Hebden 15, Heath 15,-Bear 15, Sidey 14, Edwards 13, -Teilson 13, Mayson 12, Griffin 11, Exeter 10. Finance.-It will be noted that a debit balance of £37 17s 4d remains at the end of the year. Tour Committee feel it necessary to attach hereto a report of a sub-committee appointed to go into the matter of finance dufi-g their term of offioe, from which ii will be seen that the present allowance., totally is adequate for tho carrying on of the school work. An appeal was made to the Board, but. without eft.-et. I'ouc Oommittee are of opinion that if the school is to be carried ou with due regard to cleanliness a. larger allowance must be made to the Oommittee. 'Ihe Chairman, and Messrs Sutton, Edwards, and Sidey spoke, and the report and balance-sheet were adopted. Nominations were then received for Committee as follows :—Messrs W. Barrett, T M. Murphy, L. Stead, T. Exeter, H.* Hallam, J. Neil.en, J. G. Gilberd, R. Moody, and Dr Innes. Some members of the old C.mmittee were asked to stand, but deolined the honor. Mr Sidey moved, as soon as nine names were in, that the nominations <;lose. This was carried, and there was consequent ly no ballot. -* The procetdings terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. COAGSIITTEE MEETING-. The new Committee then met, all beimr present except Mr Stead. Mr Barrett moved that Mr Gilberd be appointed Chairman. Seconded by Mr Murphy, and carried. Mr Uilberd moved that Mr Hodgson be re-appointed secretary at a salary of £12 a year, being a slight reduction ou the amount he was previously in receipt of. Mr Exeter seconded. Mr Murphy moved that Mr J. T. Hornsby be appointed, an ho would do all the work free of charge. Mr Moody seconded the motior?. Mr Gilberd did not think it was work that should be done for nothing. Mr Barrett coincided. Mr Neilsen asked it Mr Hornsby waa aware of the arduous nature of the duties required of him, and received a reply in the affirmative. The amendment was put and oarried. It was resolved to meet every second Wednesday in the month at 7 30 o'clock. ( Messrs Exeter and Barrett were appoin ted the first Visiting Committee, and the meeting adjourned. »
