Sydney, April 21. Although tho recent failures have caused uneasiness it was not until the announcement of the suspeu-don of the Joint Stocl Bank that anything approaching alarm w*i folt among the public To-day, however the Savings Bank of New South Walei camo in tor a large share of attention. There aaust have been a very large number of withdrawals, but no official information or that point is forthcoming. The banks interested state that there has been a slighl run, but nothing serious. As the closing hour approached matters quietened down. An impdrtart conference was held this afternoon between representatives of the Government and of the Bank of New South Wales and other banking companies. The Government offered every assistance in their power to maintain the credit of solvent institutions. Do-pito the run, deposits were lodged in tho JS'ew L'outh Wules Savings Bank to the extent of £11,000, while tho Post Office Savings Bank benefited to the extent of _£'__.'..,000. The safes in the Sydney Safe Deposits Company's premh.es wero at a premium, o*iug to a number of firms who withdrew coin from the banks and placed it in these private safes. The execution of the man Makin for child murder is postponed for three months in order to peimit an appeal to ba made to the Privy Council.
