Ffty steerage passengers by the mail stoamor Monowai from Sydney lodged a comprint with the Collector of Customs today with regard to the stato o£ tho steerage accommodation on board the steamer. Thty
tlleged the quarters wero gre.tly over- | crowded, tho steerage passengers being compelled to go in 'tween deens, being crowded out by the saloon passengers. The ventilation, &a., was very imperfect. The agents and officers deny ihe overcrowding, and etato tho quarters were satisfactory, were well ventilated, and not excessively crowded The Collector inspects the steamer before her departure for San Francisco. Later. In connection with the complaints re the overcrowding of the Monowiti, the Collector of Customs and health officei.s inspected the steani'T. Xhuy were satisfied with the condition of tho Meeiage, and allowed the vessel to proctei.
