THE TARANAKI RACES.

[TIPS BY " BUFF AND BLACK." |

The Taranaki races take place on Thursday and Friday nest, and the usual amount of interest is centred in them. Strange to say, when one race gathering is over, the public, fascinated by the rhance of some particular horde, back it for the next big handicap that eomee up for decision. Napier people always baok horses at outside meetings, especially if the district is represented by any animal that can travel. In the Taranaki Jockey Club Handicap Scot Free, the Napier Park Cup winner, will have a penalty of seven pounds to carry. The Dreamer did not meet Mr McKinnon's horse in the Cup, being scratched. He then had 7-12 ; now he has como down to 7-5, so that he meets Soot Free on a great deal better terms than he would have done had he started at the Park. Consequently The Dreamer muat have a rosy show. He ran second to Crown Jewel in thfi Burke Memorial at Hastings in 2min 3S 4-oth sec, and I do not think he has a Crown Jewel to meet at Taranaki, whinh is a great consideration, and eminently more satisfactory to the owner. Krina is Captain Russell's choice, and she must, in my opinion, run a big mare. She has apparently not gone off, and can get over a mile and a-half very nicely. Howover, I don't soe how she is going to give The Dreamer a pound and a beating. Whisper will have a great many admirers, her past performances warranting their allegiance, and her consistency is a good recommendation. Sh9 will beat more than will beat her. I don't think Awarua Rose istbecoltMrßedwood thinksheis, andsomehow or other I incline to the opinion that Loch Ness will be Mr McKinnon's selection on the.day, and not Scot Free ; if he is he should run into a place. In the Welter Handicap there are several horses who look well in, and one that takes my fancy is Tulloch, an animal comparatively unknown to fame, no doubt, but not a bad one. The race should Hβ between he and Torpedo. The three-quarters of a mile race certainly looks a moral on paper for Torpedo, who has a very light impost indeed, and should win. He wod the first day at the Park, and was beaten by a nose the second day. Heather Bell, Loch Ness, and Cretonne, running behind him. He should beat the trio* when next he meets them, without much trouble. Phormium Tenax and Weka should fight the race out with him. The Ladies' Bracelet event is decided on the second day. There are only four entrants, and I must confess a regard for Melas, who has lOst, the lighteet weighted of the quartette. The machine will be worked by Messrs Cohen and Stock, who, by the way, also have charge of the totalisator at the Woodville meeting, which takes place on Friday next. The following are my selections for the Taranaki meeting: — TABANAKt JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP, One and a-half miles. THE DREAMER .. .. l LOCH NESS 2 KRINA 3 WELTKE HANDICAP, One and a-quarter miles.
