Birmingham's water scheme is to cost £3,340,000 to start with, and borrowing powers to the extent of as much again are to be asked to provide for future contingencies. A distinguished French physician insists upon it that raw oysters are extremely nourishing, and that in all cases of impaired digestion and nervous troubles they are an excellent tonic. The latest craze in French jewellery is a brooch composed of the Imperial Russian banner against the French tri-color in emerald. Underneath is a crown of laurel leaves worked in diamonds. An average man of fifty has spent 6000 days, or nearly twenty years, in sleep, and has consumed about 17,000 pounds of bread and 16,000 pounds of meat, washed down with 7000 gallons of liquids. Her Majesty the Queen is the latest convert to type-writing. She is, it is said, so much pleased with the work that nowadays all orders, lists of guests, etc., in connection with the royal household are written by this means.

The longest electric railway in the world is to be constructed in Russia. The very audacious project is being considered of constructing a line from St. Petersburg to Archangel, a port of the White Sea, a distance of more than 800 kilometres (498 miles).

For the year 1892-93 the figures for the German Army are as follows : Twenty thousand five hundred and twenty-four officers, 486,988 men, 1832 surgeons, 893 paymasters and aeronauts, 559 veterinary surgeons, 855 gunsmiths, 93 saddlers, and 93,750 horses.

Although German women have not as yet succeeded in getting admitted to the German universities, a bright American girl, Miss Gentry, has coaxed from the surly authorities permission to attend lectures in the Berlin University. This is the first time on record that the favor has been granted to a woman.

The census of Cape Colony, the preliminary totals of which were sent out in April last, is now complete, and gives a grand total of 1,527,224. The analysis shows that the total European population is 376,987 ; Malay, 13,907 ; Hottentots, 50,388 ; Fingoes, 229,680 ; Kaffirs, 608,456 ; and of all other colored people, 247,896.

Professor Nothnagel, the Austrian Court Physician, traces the grip back to the ninth century, and says it recurs with varying intensity for three or four years, and then dies out for twenty or four years. As to remedies for it, Dr Nothnagel seems to be sure only of one thing, and that is that antipyrine should not be resorted to in any case. Twenty universities of the German Empire show 28,515 students who have matriculated. Their studies for the most part are : Medicine, 8916 ; law, 7202 ; Evangelical theology, 4231 ; Catholic theology, 1307. Six thousand eight hundred and forty-five students were matriculated as students in philosophy, which includes chemistry and physics.
