LORD CARRINGTON AT LIVERPOOL.
THE L ,TE REV. C. H. SPUKGEON. {•'.I-* Sf.ANDUU) 'ND COLONIAL Sl'O^EX MR SEXTON'S AMENDMENT. SUPPORTED BY THE OPPOSIHON. (Received February 12, 10.45 a.m.) London, February 11. Spi-aking at Liverpool, Lord Carrington said that Home Rule for Ireland was the first step of a frank and fearless policy of uniting Great Britian, Ireland, and the colonies. For the maintenance of the common interests of defence, and common weight, he ooutendrd that perfect selfgovernment must prevail throughout the Empire, and he declared that his criticism of Lord Knuteford's colonial policy was wrtrmiy approved in ;vu<trali:i. Tho Rev J .Vunro Gibson, D.D., Moderator of the hnglish Presbyterian Synod, the llev E. KeVbor Evans, D.D.. Chairman of the Congregational Union of Ejgland, and the Rev. Dr. Thomas B. Stephenson, President of the Wesluyau Methodist Conference, took part in the services in memory of the late Rep. C. H.
Spurgeon. The Standard declares a foolish scare possesses the market in regard to colonial stocks, becauso of the difficulty experienced in Helling them, and it deprecates people precipitating matters. The amendment moved by Mr T. Sexton in the House of Commons in connection with the failure of the Irish Land Purchase Act further declares the inability of tbe Imperial Parliament to legislate for Ireland. The Opposition support the amendment.
