Tms Bishop of Chriatchurch said at the Anglican Synod at Wellington last week that "he did not believe their church would live another twenty years in this colony if they did not have the catechism and the fundamental principles of Christianity taught to the young of New Zealand." We were reminded of this assertion last night when noticing the numbors of young men, young boys, and little children, lounging under verandahs, standing at street corners, loitering generally about the town. There was not one of them who had the slightest intention of going to church, and we strongly suspect that few of them had ever been taught the catechism. Round about the doors of the Salvation Army barracks there was the usual ero -yd ot candidates for the larrikin clans. £for one of these yonng lads was old enough to be out of the control of his parents; but yet such is the state of homo discipline that the children were allowed to wander at large uncontrolled by their elders, and uninfluenced by the training they might have received. Thi sad thing about it is that the gang that amuses itself in disturbing the Salvation Army services on Sunday night has not an elementary senso of Hblf-n>p«ct. These youngsters are decently dressed, and from whose appearance it may bo judged their parentage is respectable, aud yet their conduct in the public street approaches very closely to tho borders of the criminal. The fault, of course, lies with the parents ; if they let their children run about the town like little Maoris around a p»h, wo need not look to the rising generation as tho future support of the church.
