NOTES BY "BUFF AND BLACK."
Mr J. Koan, of Auckland, yesterday purchased The Laird (Papapa—Toi), at auction at Hastings. The son of Papapa will be taken to Auckland shortly, and trained for the country meetings. He is still as sound as a bell.
I believe that J. Donovan, the wellknown light-weight, will return from Australia in time for the H.B. Jockey Club's meeting next week.
Accommodation has been engaged at Mr H. O. Caulton's for Boulanger and Cretonne, who arrive from Wanganui to-night.
Clanranald (St. Andrew's full-brother) arrived at Hastings last night by train. He is in good form, and will be ridden by Clark in the Guineas.
Good work has been done lately by the horses engaged at the Jockey Club's meeting next week. The trainers have been up at dawn, and their charges given swinging gallops, with the result that most of them are pretty well wound up. The Guineas will .be a well contested race, and although Namoa,' Rosefeldt, Hakimana, and Hippomenes have been striding along well,
I incline to the opinion that they will all be beaten by Clanranald or Fraternite. The latter has not arrived yet, but will probably come to-morrow. He is said to be very well, and Lunn has Clanranald in good fettle ; albeit he won the big handicap.at Timaru the other day very comfortably. Cretonne cannot be very badly hurt if he is going to start for the blue ribband. Tho race should be a very good one, but it is a pitty we had not Sternchaser, Lebel, and Tiraillerie to make up the field. There will be a good race in the Hurdles, although the field is smull, inasmuch as none of the contestants are overburdened with weight. Whatever wins the Guineas must have a big show in the Spring Handicap. All the events are very open indeed. Gooseman's string are in good heart, and have been doing good work, as also have most of Munn's, except Strephon, who has not been doing heavy tasks lately. Namoa and Pearl Powder have done Borne good gallops, as also have Thame and Queen of Trumps (Mr Ormond's horses, who are trained privately), and I
believe Edwards's horses are iv fair nfok. The two-year-olds this year are daisies, and all have been doing good work. Ua (Mute —Waitiri) is a slippery customer, as also is Mystic (Wonderland — Mystery). Wonderland was sired by Musket. North Atlantic is th« best two-year-old in Mr Ormond's stable, and Gun Cotton (whose pedigree is, I think, Nordenfeldt— Patch) is said to be a good one. Wakawatea (Apremont— Becky Sharp), Thakeray's full brother, promises to follow in the footsteps of tho most fractious horse in the colony. I have not heard anything about St. Katherine (Captain Russell's candidate), but at any rate the two-year-old events will be productive of unusual interest. Dolosa, the Auokland representative, is in good form, but she did not run kindly at Auckland on the 19th. Hilda has not yet arrived, but I do not think she is as well as she was when she was here before. Boulanger will have a cut in for the big handicap, and the other Wanganui representative, La Petite Fille, must have a big show in the Flying. My tips will appear on Saturday.
A large number of visitors are now arriving in connection with the races and show. I suppose the usual number of •' spielers " wiil put in an appearance. I believe that a number of these gentry travel about from meeting to meeting and gain admission to the stand and enclosure by informing the secretaries of the various pluba that they are sporting reporters from outside papers. It would be a good thing if some of them were detected and fired out of the paddock by a policeman.
