It was thought worth while to telegraph the fact that Mr W. C. Smith had aaked the Minister for Education to aacertain the legality of the resolution of the Hawke's Bay Education Board in respect of the appointment of teachers. We have heard nothing more about it. Preaumably the law advisera of the Government told the Minister that the course intended to be pursued by the Board was precisely that which waa laid down by the Act. Mr Smith, we fancy, waa treading on delicate ground when referring to the appointment of aohool teachers. Hia Scotch friends at Waipukurau have not forgotten the action of the Church of England-cum post offieecum railway station clique, and tho sacrifice of a capable and painstaking master and mistress. Is the prospect, of n seat in " the Lords " so certain that Mr Smith can afford to throw over hia Waipukurau supporters ?
