We are sorry to hear that the construction of the road diversion between Petane and Pohui is getting on slowly. This new road is to avoid the Kaiwhaka cutting, and the forty or fifty crossings of the Petane river, on the Taupo road. The whole length to bo constructed is only fourteen miles, but only eight of thia distance is under contract, upon which twenty men are employed. It is not thought that the work will be completed before the end of January. It will be remembered that the Hon. Mr Seddon, the Minister for Public Works, on hia return from Auckland, camG by way of Taupo and Napier, and waa fully impreaaed with the necessity of making this diversion, and hence the money was voted for it. A lot of time was then lost over the battle of the routes, but as the ahorter and cheaper scheme waa finally resolved on, it might have been thought that the work would have been pushed on vigorously, so that it should be finished before the tourist season set in. The tourist traffic ia a "big thing" for Napier, and too muoh cannot be done to encourage it. We trust the County Council will see its way to call for tenders for the six miles of the route at present unlet, and to have tho work done as quickly as possible.
