[PEE PBEBS ASSOCIATION. —OOPYBIGHT.J THE BACCARAT CASE. London, June 2. The baccarat case was resumed to-day. Sir Charles Russell's i;ross-examination of Sir Gordon-Cumming is regarded ad very damaging to the plaintiff's case. The evidence to-day elicited but few new facts.
The plaintiff, under cross-examination, declared his absolute innocence as regarded the play, aud explained that his winning from the Prince of Wales and others was owing to his system of play. The examination of the Prince of Wales was brief, and his evidence was colorless. He said that the statement of five eye-witnesses that they had observed Sir GordonCumming cheating had influenced his judgment in the matter. General Owen Williams was examined, and admitted that he did not see any cheating on the part of the plaintiff. Still he and others signed the confession in order to secure the required silence. The witness declared that the frince of Wales told Sir Gordon-Cumming that to play with his hands on the table did not look well. The witness said that Sir Lysett Green, son-in-law of Mr Arthur Wilson, at whose residence the offence was alleged to have been committed, was the first to accuse the plaintiff of obeating, and that Mr Berkeley Levett also witnessed it. LIGHTING MKLBOCTRNE BY ELECTRICITY". A powerful syndicate is arranging to light the city of Melbourne by electricity. The motive power will be water, and the capital of the company will probably be £200,000. IRISH CENSUS. The Irish census returns show a decrease in the population of 500,000 in the last decade.
THE 'BUS MEN. Over 4000 employes of the London General Omnibus Company threaten to go cut ou strike on Fridny unless their demand for twelve hours per day and an increase of wages is conceded. FINANCE. Forty bankers met the directors of the Bank of England to-day to discuss the fixing of discount rates and to take steps to prevent a dram of gold from London in summer. A BIG SCHEME. The London County Council has been informed by its chairman, Sir John Lubbock, that it will soon be essential for the Couucil to expend the sum of £25,000,000 on necessary works in the City. These include water supply, the completion of the drainage system, and rebuilding London Bridge. NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS. Sydney, June 2. Bolh the Government and Opposition parties are actively engaged ptepanng for the coming campaign. It is understood that the Opposition will leave Federation an open question, while Protection and the one-ivan-one-vote system will be prominent features in their programme. The labor party made strenuous but unavailing efiorts to induce Sir George Grey to remain over the elections to assist them.
