A piece of land comprising ten acres, fenced in, and laid in grass, situated alongside of Mr Chales Baddley's paddock near the Danevirke railway station, and once the property of Messrs Ronberg and Clausen.. was sold the other day by Mr Bierre, land.' agent, to Mr Mitchell," cordial manufacturer, for the handsome sum of £200. which evidently shows that landed propertyin this district is rising in value. The; same piece of land could have been purchased some few months ago for £50 less. Danevirke is now looking up, and things-, appear to be working up to greater activity.. Several small cottages, one iargre residence,, and a comfortable shop fer fruit and refreshment business are now in the hands of; the builders.
The election of the Lienneing Commissioners is now over, which settled the question that there shall be no decrease of the licenses now held in the districts of Danevirke and Mangatera, and so thereby greater confidence is generally inspired; in regard to the progress aud prosperity of thoso districts. Lately, on. many occasions;, there has not been enough room, in ourhotels to accommodate all our visitors, and! hence the shortening and narrowing the only nieaas at our disposal feu? accommodation would certainly tend to drive away our visitors who periodioairy come to the town for the purpose of procuring the benefit of the change of air, and the improvement of their health. But at the same time, although in my humble opinion it is the correct aud proper thing to grant licenses to all the hotels in our district which aro being well conducted, y e t it is about time that something should bey done by the Commissioners who are no«- jn power for three years with a view to have better liquors dealt out to the people, that the best, and most wholesome of their kind procurable be used, and that inferior qualiies be not allowed. It is not the number of hotels in a town which, produces extra drunkenness, insanity and deaths, but the poisonous and prenjeious quality of the.) liquors used.
The weather is now flue and dry, and it is to be hoped that it may continue so tor. some time to come, so as to get a good burn which would be a great benefit to tie bush* districts, as otherwise tens of thousand pounds sterling of a. loss will be the result.
