Hastings.

The Government crane has been at work lately at Hastings unloading the sections of a handsome and powerful traction engine and threshing machine by Marshall, Sons, and Co., Gainsborough, which is imported to the order of Captain Russell. Landed at Hastings, it will cost £800. Mr Metherell is directing the erection of the machine. Your Hastings readers will rejoice to hear that they will have an opportunity of hearing the "Mikado" and " lolanthe" without leaving Hastings. Negotiations have been opened, and are nearly completed, with the Napier Operatic Company to produce these operas on the 19th and 20th inst., with their full stieugth and complete mountings. Having gone to Napier to witness one of their "operas, I have no hesitation iv saying that their rendering of the operas are in many points superior to the average run of operatic professional companies, and ther* is no doubt that they will have a good reception here if they come.
One of the Hastings tourists to Taupo had an unpleasant experience. While exploring the hills in that pictnresque locality he got lost. It was some time before he was missed at the hotel. A search party of eight men was organised, and after many hours suceeded in finding him. I believe he said his grace at the table d'hote with devout thankfulness when he got his legs under it, never expecting to enjoy another meal. The Hastings School Committee, after a long sitting and wading through the mass of testimonials which accompanied the nineteen applications, .elected a few of the best for ballot. The result was that Mr W. Martin, of Woodville, was recommended to the Board for the position of second master.
The Midget and Canaris combination attracted last night one of the largest houses ever seen in Hustings The dwarfs, General Mite and his wife, were, of course, the great attraction, and fairly astonished the audience. Their joint weight is under tweuty-niiu pounds. They aro perfectly formed, and intelligent, the little General taking an intelligent interest in current topics, and his tiny consort beintf as much at her ease as a society belle in a ball room. The little people aro nice looking, especially the lady. They danced a schottische very gracefully, and the General sang two songs, both of *-hioh were encored. Tho little lady showed the writer the diamond ring given her by tho Princess of Wales. The title of U-oneral is no nickname, as President Hayes conferred it upon him, and Ihe is, in fact, an honorary General of th 6 United States army and willing to enter on his duties if his country requires it. The other attractions are a good show of themselves. Miss Annie Beaumont, with her duplex voice of tenor aud soprano, had every song encored. It is certainly a wonderful gift. Dr. Cauaris's performances, both of legerdemain and the mysterious cabinet, must be seen to bo believed. They perform again to-night with an entire change of programme.
