We are pleaced to hear that nine Volunteers oornjjoted at the examination for ambulance work last Monday evening under Surgeon-Major Spencer. As far as we can gather, the results are highly satisfactory.
The Customs duties collected at the port of Napier for the month of December amounted to .£1371 17s 5d and beer duty £373 5s Id, as against £6055 10s 2d and £311 !)s !)ci respectively for the corresponding month of 1889.
The mail by the direct steamer Kaikoura will arrive in Napier this cvuniug by the lute train, and will be at onco sorted into the boxes. A delivery will be raitdo over the counter after the letter portion of the mail has been ported, commencing about half-past ton o'clock.
We have been requested to etato that the order culling a parade of the garrison volunteer corps for this evening hits been caucelled. It has been considered by tho authorities that no bar should be offered to our Volunteers to their enjoyment of New SToar's Eve.
