Commercial.

Mr H. P. Cohen reports as follows:—At my stock sale at Hastings yesterday fat cattle were only in moderate numbers, and hardly equal to tho demand. Competition throughout the salo was very keen for choice medium- eized steers, which sold at an advance on late rates. Store cattle of all ages wore yarded in full numbers, but the unusual long spell of very dry weather had a depressing effect on the sale of this class, which moved very slowly. The whole of the fat stock woio quitted at tho following rates •—Choico medium steers £4 15s and £5 sb, forward steers £3 17s (3d, fat heifers £3 7s (id to £3 12s Gd, fat cows £4, forward cows £3 to £3 ss. Store Cattlo.—Cowa with calves at foot £2 10e, IS month heifers 355, 18 month steers £2, two-year-old steers £2 5e yearlings 30s. Dairy cows were in email numbers and averaged lato rates. My next stock sale will be held at Taradalo on-the 22nd mat, when I have a choice lot of Christmas beef and other stock to offer.

The following is taken from tho N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's London circular dated October 31st.: — New Zealand Hemp.—During tho greater part of tho past four weeks, a fairly steady enquiry prevailed, and values, although exhibiting alight fluctuations, wore on tho whole without material alteration. A decidedly better feeling, however, has latterly been manifested, and at tho most recent auctions, which took place on 29th instant, under the influence of stronger competition than has been experienced for some time past, an advance of from 30s to 40s per ton was recorded on all save ordinary brownish sorts which ruled about 10s per ton higher. The firmer tendency of the market for this fibre is to be attributed to the marked improvement which has taken place in Manila, values for which Lave, during the past two weeks, advanced £1 per ton. Supplies of the latter on the spot aro at tho moment praotic illy exhausted, and holders are asking £iU 10s P or ton for fair current t0 ar * rive c.i.f. terras. Since our last issue, 5 982 baloe have been offered at public auction, of whish somo 4,500 have been disposed of at and after the sales. Rathor more business has Ixicn passing in sifnl which exhibits a firmer tendency at tho close. Frozen Meats.—Sinco the date of our l'aet issue supplies of Homo-fed and Continental meat have, as a rule, proved in excoes of the current demand, and prices have exhibited a downward tendency. American beef has oomo forward freely, and it has been necessary to accept very low prices in order to effect clearances, but during the last few days tho quantity received has been on a smaller scale. Owing to the outbreak of disease in Holland, the exportation of live sheep from that country has been etopped, and this circumstance has been tho means of rapidly increasing shipments thence of mutton in carcase. During the earlier part of tho period under review stocks of frozen mutton wore relatively moderate, but with jitie arrival of the Kaikoura, Elderslfo, Lady Jocelyn, Mamari, and Doric, they have been considerably angumonted. A fair enquiry has been manifested throughout for New Zealand mutton. Prime carcasses of small weighthavo been limited, but the supplies of yocondary qualities marketed from day to day have proved sufficient for trado requirements, and prices for these descriptions have remained without material change. Tho mild weather latterly experienced, however, has oheeued the demand to a largo extent, and prices are weaker at tho close. In consequence of tho plentitudo of and low prices ruling for Amoriotin beef, frozen sorts have, f.-r the most part, proved difficult of sale, but recently some improvement has been witnessed in the enquiry, supplies of American descriptions having been less plentiful.
