There is a law iv New York whioh prohibits lads under sixteen years ol age from smoking in public under pain of a fine of not less than £2, and not exceeding £4. It would be a good thing for a large number of boys in Napier if there were a similar law hore.

It is scarcely necessary necessary to remind our readers of the fact that "Rip Vau Winkle" will be agaiu staged at tho Theatro Royal this evening As only two performances are to be given, to-night and to-morrow evening, thoso who have not yet witnessed tho opera should avail themselvos of tho opportunity.

What can the Waipawa Mail mean by the following paragraph, published yesterday P "Oily Gammon was on the stump last night at Napier, but his swavity failed co procure him a very encouraging reception. The outlook is not promising for him. Coaching Titmouso would pay better."

Hansard seldom repays tha labor of reading it, but at times iv rooting amongst tho dry leaves you unearth a pearl of price. Horo is ouo:—Mr. T. Mackenzie noticed £2000 for tracks to Western Sounds iv Otago. After tho support he hud blindly given tho Government he had hoped that the Minister would have said £260,000; and further, that he intended to have a route selected by a qualified engineer and veterinary surgeon, so that the monoy would bo well expended and that travelling live stock might ba attended to.—Mr. Fergus said it would bo done.

A correspondent kindly sendsi us (Lyttelton Times) tho following :-A Scotch paper says it has been supplied with a pattern of church scat-rent slip, which is quite a novelty in its way; printed in skeleton form, it runs as follows:— " To sitting due at Whitsunday, £-• To sittings duo at Martinmas, £—. Collector for Deacon s Court. Psalm xciv., v. 8." Turning to the passage referred to, tho defaulting seat-holder is met with the somewhat alarming interrogation:—" Understand, yo brutish among the people, aud ye fools, when will ye bo wine." Though seat-rent collectors, like others, may sometimes be provoked to use vernacular more forcible than polite, wo can hardly behove that church-goers deserve such a hurled at them indiscriminately, but. j refet . to regard the psadmie rgeronce „ a J » the copy,, or piobaly < £ perversity i pnn^Mhat P wo_hy,tf/vin ff a twist to the 1 for, , the V .a the numerals tha chapter, and turning to Psalm xi'vi 'V 8, tho.effect is remarkable, for the houe»t worshipper will then be encouraged . tho Lord tho glory duo unto : gfcXo * "ring an o_en« 6 ~ «** «»*> »>* I bin pourts"—which most probably is the \ passage intended. There was another thin house at the Theatre Royal last night, when the SylvoLawton Company gave their concluding performance. No doubt the long and successful ruu of " Rip Van Winkle" has had a bad effect on the success of the clever little Sylvo-Lawton Company, which is to be regretted, for they are deserving of better support. Sylvo again went through his wonderful balancing and juggling feats, and was warmly applauded. Mdlle. Corina also brought down the house with her slack-wire performance, while Mr Alf Lawton and Miss Spencer afforded no _d of amusement in their specialties, the former in his negro sketches, and the lattor especially in her masher songs and sailor's hornpipe. The performance ooncluded with a farce.

Instances are often cited of the keen competition so prevalent throughout this country, but our Australian cousins now indulge in business tactics which happily dp not obtain in England. ' At Rookwood, the cemetery adjoining Sydney, visitors no sooner enter the city of the dead than they are pestered by the minions of monumental masons with " Try our latest in head-stoves: a perfect fit guaranteed ; this style £b only, angels extra; bankrupt sale of columns and cenotaphs now on;" or, " Monuments and vaults Buppliod on time payment." This derogatory and unseemly practice has at last roused the ire of the Sydney press, and an effort is now being made to preveut such wanton desecration of the cemetery grounds. To tout for tomb-stones shows a taste, or want of taste, almost on a par with a notice once adopted by a London undertaker who advertised, " Why lead a miserable life when for 30s you may be buried comfort- | ably ?"— Pall Mall Budget.
