Sir G. T. Cross leaves by first train tomorrow for Wellington to attend the Licensed Victuallers' conference, which commences its sittings on Monday.
A very amusing race took place this afternoon on the Marino Parade between two of the local telegraph operators. One ran a hundred yards and the other fifty yards with an operator on his back. The pair won by by three yurda.
Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. have to-day received the following cablogram from their London house, Messrs Sanderson, Murray, and Co., dated 24th instant:— " Compared with closing rates of the last London sales, market has advanced 5 per emit. For good combing merino Australian wools market advanced 5 to 9| per cent."
Our Waipawa correspondent wired as follows this afternoon :—" Mr Alexander Maokay, Road Overseer, Patnngata, was found lying on tho road two miles from hie residence on Wednesday night. He was carried homo and died yesterday, it is supposed from concussion of tho epine.—Before Messrs Johnson and Inglis, Justices, to-day, Tom Long was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment: for filthy, obscene, and blasphemous language, to fourteen days; for supplying liquor to Florence Kelly, a prohibited person. After being warned by the police, he was fined £,0 or one month. On the sentence being" passed Long turned to Sergt McCardle and said he would give him a drick when he came out as well as Kelly. The Court then ordered him to be detained while they consulted, and then stated that in oousequenco of the contempt of Court they would make tho sentences cumulative."
