|OWK COBBESPONDENT. ]
Tho committee appointed to obtain information with the view of forming i Farmers' Association met at the Taradale Hotel on Saturday evening, the meeting beiug attended by a considerable number of settlers who had received invitations.
Mr W. Waterhouse having been voted to the ohair, the secretary of the committee (Mr W. B. Hill) stated that the committee had been in correspondence with the Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Association, whose secretary had courteously furnished balance-sheets and reports for the past two years, which he would ask the chairman to read to the meeting, together with the correspondence.
Tho chairman stated that this meeting was not called to discuss iv any shape or form any question arising out of the existing labor dispute, but the business of tho meeting was to consider the desirability of funning an association to protect the interests of producers.
The report and balance-s'aeet of the Canterbury Association were then read, which showed that institution to- be in a most flourishing condition, and paying good dividends and bonuses to those connected with it. Two letters were also read intimating that their articles of association v ere being revised, and as soon as the work was satisfactorily completed the committee would Ihj furnished with a copy. Mr. Cartwright Brown explained at considerable length thi working of farmers' associations, pointing out the benefits to bo diiiyed from co-operation, and stating that in his opinion tho association, to be of any appreciable benefit, should embrace the whole of Hawko's Bay. Mr. J. K. Camerou followed with an amount of information interesting to the meeting, strongly urging co-operation, also illustrating how such a course would greatly improvo ouo important article of dietbutter, which could then bo worked by a mechanical process, which would have the effect of its being placed on the market as butter, and not as in many instances at present, in the shape of nothing but grease. Mt. W. Kirkham thought the meeting was in favor of establishing the association, and to test the feeling of those present he would move:—"That this meeting considers it desirable, and to the best interests of producers, that a company be formed, to be known as the ' Hawko's Bay Farmers' Co-operativo Association.'
