At the R.M. Court to-day, before Mr Wellwood, J.P., George Sadler, an American negro, was chargod with stealing an overcoat, the property of William Stone. Two convictions were proved against the prisoner, one at Hawera and another at Opunako. These convictions wero admitted by prisoner, who also pleaded guilty to tho present offence. Sentenced t> three months' hard labor.
The nomination for the office of Mayor closed at noon to-day. There was only ono nomination—that of Mr W. F. Burnett, ironmonger, who is therefore elected. Mr Burnett "is now to public lifo in Hastings, but the fact of his acceptance of the Mayoralty has been received with general satisfaction.
Tho exhibition of dissolving views at the Town Hall last evening by Mr Bissell, in aid of the Clivo church fencing fund, was a great success. Tho musical portion of the entertainment afforded great satisfaction to those present. An important feature of it was tho explanatory lecture by the Rev. O. E. Beecroft, which was of itself well worth the visit to tho Hall.
