[BY a.MLKUUAPH.") W'klllNOton, This day. OCEAN Hi in t!i'.'RVICK3. As was anticipated, the days of the 'Frisco service aro numbered, and authority for a renewal of the contract, which terminates in November next, is nol likely to be asked. Mr Mitchelson has received cable advice from San Francisco that tho Tonnage Subsidy Bill has not passed, but tliat the United States Government oilers a subsidy of 00,000 dollars if New Zealand will carry tho 'Frisco .service on for another year. As this would only mean .CI'.!,000, our Government cannot see their way to ask Parliament to continue the service. Proposals for tho oeoau mail service will probably be submitted to the Houso next wool;. These, I understand, will provide for carrying tbe outward mail matter by direct steamers, payment to be by letter and tonnage, and the service to bo fortnightly. Tho proposal to be submitted by the Government will make our contribution f'-om iili-500 to .WOOD, according to tho amount of poiindasri' paid. The Imperial Government will arrange for the service from England, "mi thi.- will probably bo by tin; federal purA-ei.
