Tho peoplo here, iv view of tho difficulty at the Grey mines, and in fear of a coal famine, are laying in extensive supplies for household purposes, while some have gone to the extent of telegraphing to Dunedin for coal. As it was fouud that an expense of £0000 was necessary to effect improvements at the Wallsend miue, and in view of the labor difficulties tho mine has been practically and permanently closed. I learn that so far as the. Coalpithcad and Brunucr mines are concerned, all work with the exception of pumping has been stopped for tho past three weeks. Should the strike extend to Westport the harbor works thero will mo-t probably be closed, and this will mean the throwing out of employment of three or four hundred additional Union
