Henry Rogers, c:ib driver, sued tho 'Bus Company at tho K.M. Court yesterday afternoon for £6 Via, as damages, which he alleged was done through one of the 'bust-es colliding with his vehicle. Mr Cresswell appeared for iho plaintiff and Mr Lascelies for the defendants. After hearing all the evidence, Mr "Wardoll, K.3L gave judgment for phiintiff for £3 19s, with costs amount* ing to £5 Ss.
Mr MeKouzie is now in Napier for the purpose of introducing his instantaneous Drawing Room Cream and Furniture Renovator. In tho south his preparation is highly esteomed, antl from a practical illustration he gave to the first class furniture of our office, tho cream does all that is claimed for it, and will remove stains either of grease or ink from furniture, and give them a very fine polish.
In another column will be found a report of the appeal case in the matter of the Aratnura Block, Porangahau, and the decision of Mr Justico Edward* as telegraphed by tho Pre?s Association iv which tho appeal*against Optain Preece's refusal of n certificate to a lease was upheld. Tho caso has its interesting features upon which we may have something to say when we get the full report.
Mr Justice Edwards gave judgment, this morning, in the caso in which Georgo Payne appealed against the deoision of Mr Robinson, R.M., who fined him 20s and costs for exposing New South Wales oysters for sale during the class season. His Honor heH thnt imported oysters did not come within tho provisions of tho Act, and allowed tho appeal with costs Mr Skerrett appeared for the appellant, Mr Gully being on the other side.—Poit.
• An issue of The Jewish World to hand by tho last luail contains the statement that Herr Jacob Armstedc, a Riga merchant, has presented the Town Council of that port with a mm of 300,000 roubles, to bo expended in the erection of a homo for the pour, without distinction of oreed or nationality. After what we have heard of the persecutions of tho Jews iv Russia, this generosity of Herr Armstodt is very noteworthy, und shows that Jews as well as Christiuus understand the way of treating their enemies known as "heaping coals of fire on their heads."
At the Educational Institute, Duuodiu, yesterday, the question of scholarships was under consideration, when a number of resolutions wore adopted, tho chief of which was to the effect that it is advisable to have, both junior und .senior scholarships open to all children, whether attending public schools or not. The Rev. Dr. Dunlop read ii paperoti "Tho Touching of Morality in Schools," in tho discussion of which Mr Wilson, rector of tho Girls' High School, t.poko etrougly against tliu exclusion of the Biblo from the .State schools. It was decided to bring under the notice of tho council of the Now Zealand Institute tho matter of tho KngH.sU and Scctoh codes, and the results of three years' experiments in testing all scholars under Standard 111. by class instead of individual examination, with a view of consideration whether it was desirable to try a similar experiment in this colony.
