Henry Simmons was yesterday charged before the local Bench with vagrancy and having no means of support. Sergeant M'Ardle stated that he had received several complaints from residents that defendant had solicited alms l'rom them, and he had slept in outhouses and the like for about a week that he had been loafing about the, tx.vuship. Defendant pleaded not guilty, niitl said he was a. tinsmith, and practised liis calling when he could get any to do. As no witnesses were in attendance, he was allowed the benefit of the doubt, with an intimation 1 hat if he was found in tlio streets in the evening ho would be again taken into custody, lie. took the hiut and cleared out of the town straight away. If, transpired that he bad 011I3" left Napier gaol a few weeks since, where ho had been located for ,1 month for similar conduct at Woodville.
Iloni Herehere has written n letter stating that he had been visited in connection with his obstruction to the opening of the Mfiiuiwatu bridge on the Wainui road, near Danevirke, by Messrs G. D. Hamilton and if. Carlson, and that through their inilucncc bo had allowed the work to go on without further obstruction on his part, lie gives his good wishes to tho whole peopl'o of Danuvirke, and would like it known that if he had been applied to in the fir.it instance no difficulty would have beeu raised.
A concert was given on Friday evening at Tamumn with tho object of extinguishing tho debt on the new Presbyterian Church there. The affair proved so successful that the desired object was attained.
Dr. Godfray give his second lecture to the Ambulance Corps last night, when tho 'ho attendance wa» about the same as last week. leave for another engagement. The doctor's style made everything very easily understood.
Mr and Mrs A. Dillon ara going to celebrate their silver wedding next week by a trip over the North Island, visiting Auckland, the Hot Lakes, Tarauaki, Wanganui, and tho West Coast.
