The Grand National Steeplechase was a very slow one, taking faddy Longlegs lOmin. 27sec. Last year Chemist won in Omin. 12sec, and the year be-foru Mangaohane did the distance in Drain. 2'Jsee.
The principal steeplechases of this year are now over, and the following is a list of the events, tho number of horses handeiapped, aud tho number of starters : — No. Stakes Winner HiU-j. Sir Eguiont .. 1011 Gasparini 10 7 Wanganui ~ 200 Sir Garnet 17 5 Auckland .. 300 Jenny .. 17 5 Hawke's Bay 300 Jenny .. 18 -1 Napier Park 175 Geo .. 11 7 Wellington .. 150 Orient .. 15 S G. National.. -100 Daddy Longlegs 20 0 —This shows what a big weeding out then; has been in most of the events. The average in most of the events bus been a good less than half. The Napier Park has the best average and Wellington next. Titokowi'.ru has been sold in Melbourne to Mr J. O. liiglis for G75 guineas and Donald to Mr 11. Phillips f.,r 300 guineas. I hear that Cuirassier has been heavily backed for tho Melbourne Cup. There is very littlo bcul sporting news to rcnort. Tho training tracks have beep, too bad to work upon, and tho horses have been doing walking exercise on the roads. Jack Atkins has now charge of Mr G. P. Donnelly's horses, aud has six or seven in work at Crissoge. At a rough calculation I believe in another month there will be between sixty and seventy horses in work in this district. I will shortly give a list of all I know of belonging to the different stables. Mr Baker, the owner of the thoroughbred sire Somnus, informs mo that ho will most likely stand both Somutu and Lochnagarin this district this season. Sornnus, who is the siro of Dndu and other good performers, should, if' he is well mated, prove a useful siro. He has breeding, size, and qualify, and has taken several first prizes at tho shows.
