A COUNTERMANDED ORDER. London, July 9,
Considerable excitement was created at Portsmouth upon it being known that the Inuiskilliug Royal Fusiliers had been ordered to London. Subsequently the order was countermanded, THE GRENADIERS. It is now admitted that the 2nd Battalion of Grenadiers under Colonel Maitland have been overworked. Lord Salisbury, in the Houce of Peers, in reference to tho demonstration made by that Regiment, said tho affair was trivial, but that Mr Stanhope, Secretary of War, was enquiring into the matter. THE POLICE. The policomen who have been dismissed for insubordination complain that iv their action to secure their demands they were deserted by the public, on whom they relied for support, and they now insist upon being reinstated. The discontent is confined to the young policemen. The city force is contented. MORE RIOTING. kjoino moro rioting has occurred in Bow street, and sixteen persons have been arrested. A determined attempt was made to rescue the prisoners, but tho police used their batons, and blood was spilt. Tho military wero in readiness, but tho police being able to copo with tho mob, they were not called out. THE POSTMEN. A full muster of the postmen has been ordered. A further withdrawal of blacklegs has been compelled. AFRICA. Lord Salisbury is reticent as to what transpired when the African deputation waited upon him. HELIGOLAND. It is probable that an English squadron commanded by Admiral the Duke of Edinburgh will proceed to Heligoland and formally hand over the Island to tho Emperor of Germany. POTATO BLIGHT. The potato blight has made its appearance in Ireland. THE CONGO. Belgium is acquiring more territory in the region of the Congo. BULGARIA. It is awerted that Prince Ferdinand was desirous of abdicating his position in Bulgaria, but that M. Stamboulofl' dissuaded him from doing so. MR PARNELL'S REMEDY. Mr Parnell, in his evidence before the Parliamentary Colonising Committee, advocated assisted emigration from Ireland, and that the fisheries should be subsidised.
