It is currently reported that Lord Randolph Churchill has become reconciled to his former colleagues, and bis return to tbe Cabinet is regarded as imminent, and that he will receive eiiher tbe Secretaryship of India or of Ireland. It is also reported that in the event of Lord Randolph taking the Secretaryship of Ireland Mr A J. Balfour would lead tbe House of Commons in succession to Mr W. H. Smith, who is ''kely to accept a peerage. July 7. Sir J. F. Garrick, formerly AgentGeneral for Queensland, who was asked to contest a seat at the next general election, has finally decided not to come forward. The Bow Street polico, who go out on strike to-night, havo warned tradesmen to close specially early, as a safeguard for their premises. An order has been mado to wind up tbe Mortgage and Agency Company of Australasia under the supervision of tbo Court.

In the Supreme Court to-day tbo case of Cbnnell v. Neill and Co., of New Zealand, an action to recover tho sum of £900, was called. Counsel for the defence applied to set aside the writ of summon*, contending that the company was a foreigu corporation outside the jurisdiction of the Court. Tbe Chief Justice granted the application with costs, remarking that if the decision were wrong it was desirable to havo it settled on appeal. If, on tbe other band, the decision was a right one, it was of sufficient importance to arrest the attention of tho Legislature.

A sculling race between Kerr, tbo champion amateur sculler of this colony, snd Bubear, ex-champion of England (professional), was won by the .latter by a dozen lengths. At tho bonus meeting of tbe Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society it was shown that the cash surplus was equivalent to over £300.000, the invested funds exceeded £1,000,000, and tbo new business amounted to £8,.'135,076.
