DEATH OF THE MAHDI. London, December 1. A rumor has reached here to the effect that the Mahdi is doad. JRISH LAND PURCHASE SCHEME. It is stated that Monsignor Satodi, reporting to His Holiness the Popo on the present state of Ireland, denies the statement that tho Government land purchase scheme involves the expenditure of ten millions of money. FEDERATION. Sir Henry Parkes's acquiescence in the suggestion of Mr Gillies, that representatives of New South Wales should attend the Federal Council, is generally approved in political circles and by tho Press. It is understood that Lord Rosebery is in favor of colonial federation, but is doubtful if Sir Henry Parkes's scheme could be successfully carried out. PREMATURE STATEMENT. The statement previously telegraphed that the Emperor Willliam had consented to his sister the Princess Marguerite entering the Greek Church is premature. SOUDAN TRADE. Trade with tho Soudan, excepting in arms and grain, has boon ro-opeued. INFLUENZA IN RUSSIA. - There is an epidemic of influenza throughout Russia, which is regarded as the foreruunor of an outbreak of cholera. BOULANGER. The election of General Boulanger for Montmartre, one of theParasian constituencies, has been validated. BRAZIL. The French Government have formally recognised the Brazilian Republic.
