. The annual .meeting of the, Waipawa Athlelio Club,wai-held last night at the Empiro Hotel. The nttendanco was onlymoderate. , Bfr A, E. Jull occupied the chair, and after tho minutes? had been, dealt with, he stated there "Was a debit balance of
i> 1, and went ovfcr the items in the.balance
sheet, from \Vhibh it appeared than ah 'account was due to the Tklkgrai'ii, and he
suggested that those present should "eubsciibe the deficiency so that they could start again with a clean sheet. This course was readily responded to, and the balance-sheet, duly audited, was passed as follows •—lncome—Balance £8 6s -Id, privileges £15, nominations £S 2a Gd, acceptances £4 109 gates and stand £23 ss, cards l lse, post entries £11 9s 8c , ., donations £3 3s, subscriptions £11 10s, proceeds dance £3 9s, cash £1, advertisements on cards £1 2s Gd, total £93 17s 15d. Expenditure—Prizes £72, labor £2 19s, Band £6 10s, Mail £4, Telegraph £2 r>3, medals £2 l»e -Id, cash in lieu of cup £2, cheques and stamps 5b 6d, total £93 17s 10(1. Mr Garry then moved that the Club hold their sports on Boxing Day, 1891, and Mr Scrimgeour supported it, but after some conversation, it was altered to 1890, and then withdrawn to allow notice to be given. Mr Annnnd then moved that the name be altered to tho Caledonian Society, and some new items added to tho programme?, but tho chairman declined to put it without notice. Considerable argument followed, in which it transpired that the Club had been in a state of decadence during late years, owing to other bodies starting amusements on that day. and as Mr Annand said, the absence of bag-pipes and kindred matI ters from the programme. Unfortunately, ! tho lattor statement was not borne out by the minutes, and the Chairman showed that they wero omitted one year only, and last year, when again included, there was a deficit, and that only three competitors appeared, and there was a lat tee loss on the entries. Mr Annand said they were not likely to be competitors for prizes of £1 10s. It was mentioned that the Napier Caledoid tn Society had refused to hell a meeting here, owing to the action of town members; someone else said it was the action of tho country members, and Mr Annand denied that anything of the sort had transpired. It was then suggested that the meeting should adjourn till the 15th November, when, if Mr Annand could bring sufficient members with him, his object could bo achieved. At last it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs Williams and McLean, that the meeting do adjourn for a week to consider the following notices of motion by Mr Garry:—"That the customary sports bo not held on Boxing Day next;" by Mr Annand, '• That the name of the club be changed to Waipawa Caledonian Society. ?' The meeting then broke up. There is wanted something to stir up the Club, but I feel pretty mire Mr Garry's motion will be carried; if not, there will bo infusion of new blood to back up Mr Annnnd. which will increase the funds as a prior condition. It may bo said with a show of reason that the national credit of the Scotsmen has got in* volvod in this matter.
Mr Gould, solicitor, shook the dust of Waipawa off Uis feet yesterday, and it is understood, purposes settling in Foxton.
