DESCRIPTION OF THE RACE.
O'CONNOR QUICKEST AWAY.
HOLLOW PROCESSION AT THE
FINISH

The race was started at 1.25 p.m. The betting was five to four on Searle, who chose the sunny side of tho course, O'Connor was the first away, and ho secured an advantage of holf-ii-lcngrh, rowing a fast race. Searle, however, got k-vel passing Orabtree, and was leading by half-a-length at the Soapworks. The champion gradually increased his lead, and it was at once apparent that he had the race well in hand. He was leading by a length at Hammersmith, and by two lengths at Chiswick, whilo ho was increasing tho distance between the boats at every stroke. O'Connor weakly spurted, but it was unavailing, and ho showed signs of distress at Barnes. From thence the race was a hollow procession, Searlo passing tho winning post ten lengths ahead of tho Canadian. Tirao, 22mine. 4.sees. Tho weather was splendid, and tho water all that could bo desired. One hundred thousand persons are estimated to havo witnessed the race, and Searlo was enthusiastically cheered. The winner rowed the first mile in 4mins. 52secs., Hammersmith bridge was reached in Fmins. USsecs., and Barnes was passed in lOmins. 3secs.
