NOTES BY "HIPPO."

The chief topic amongst racing men this ■week bKS been the weight.-, for the New Zealand Cup, «nd the chances of the difforont boraes. on tha list. Manton, of course, heads the list with Out 61b, a weight ho in well on titled to in the company. Lust nprini?, when far from fit, he won the H.B. Guineas, 1 mile, with 8«t 101b up, in 1 mm. 45 2-oths sees Ho was second in tho Flying Handicap nt the same meeting, with 7st 10lb, won by Escapade ("at Olbx) the 6 furlongs being done in lmin. lGsecs. On the Hceuud day, in the Spring 1 Handicap, with "st Gibs, lie was second to Leopold (7st), the li miles being run in lmin. 44sec9. At the 0.J.0. spring meeting in November, the only time he has been really fit, he won the New Zealand Oup with Cat 10lb up, in the fastest time yet recorded here, the 2 miles being done in 3min '4Vj«cc. On tho second day he won tho Derby in '2mm 39seo, and on the third day tho Canterbury Cup, trettini? over the mike in 4mm. 12eoc. At tho Auckland Summer Meeting ho was very much oif color, so much ho that many thought it was a shame to run him; he could not, withSst 71b, get a place in the Auckland Cup, ran second to Cuirassier in the Derby, and second to Loehicl in the Auckland Hate. At the Wanganui meettinjr he was a little better, but not near the horse he was at tho C. J. C. meeting, and he just managed to win the Derby. Chain Shot, Cuirassier, and Dudu have each 9et. Chain Shot ran second to Mauton in both the 0.J.0. Derby and the Canterbury Cup. Cuirassier was at his best at tho Auckland Summer Meeting, whore ho won the Trial Stakes, 1 mile, with "st 111b, in lmin. 47a«i. t and the Derby in 2min. ■lOAseo At the autumn meeting he al«o won the Auckland St. Leaer; ho ie undoubtedly a Kood colt when welt. Dudu is not badly treated. Her running at Wellington and Dunedin, to say the least of it, was not ooneietont. I took very little notice of her running until she got into Ted Cutts a hands, after which, with 7et; 51b, she won tho C J.C. Midsummer Handicap (1-J mile) in 2min. 38ae0., and paid £10 10s dividend. In the Craven Stakes, 7 furlongs, with B.it 1 b, ehe was third to Golden Crest (Get. 121b.) and Euby (7st. 131b,). She then went to Wellington, and in the Cup (2 miles) with 7st 71b , Brown, who rode her, could not hold hor back to the rest, and she.won ma canter by 20 lengths, Sultan (/at. 81b) being eocond and Lenore (Gst. 81b.) third. Time, 3min. 37m0. Tho next, day in the W K,C. Handicap, H- miles, with 'Jut. Olb., ehe was beaten by a head by Sultan (Sat. 71b)- time, 3min. lOsec. She afterwards went to the Dunedin meeting, where she •was made a hot favorite for the Diuiedin Cup, in which she had B s t. 61b., but was unplaced, Sultan (Set.). Vandal (Get. ,Ib.), and Occident ((tat. 41b.) being the three placed horses ; time, amin. o3ieec. On the Lcond day she won the D.J.C. Handicap, liSwfwiU. Brt. 111b., Vandal (7rt lib.) seVud! Manton (Set. 101b.) third ; time, "miv. 42jsec. Tlm mare won easily. It was after this extraordinary reversal of form that the stewarda called upon Mr Cutts to explain the mare's running, xho explanation the stowarde declared unsatisfactory, end ho was let off with a caution. Dudu next went to Wanganui, and in tho Wanganui Cup, lf{ miles, with Ost Dlb. ran second to Lady Nora (7«t I2lb), time 3m»ii w. On the second day, with Oat 12lb, she won the Wanganui Stakes, lj miles totimr Leopold (7»t 71b) and Strenuous (gst 21b) She is a mare that is fast, and can stay and carry weight. It « ell »he is not out of it. Eocluse hae Bnt 12lb. He has proved himeelf a brilliant colt, with a lot of pace. Had to been well ridden, he ougiht to huve beaten Manton in the Wanganui Derby. At the H B J C autumn tneutuiij he, with Tst 131b, won the H.B. Cup, If niileN, beating Leopold (fct 121b). Voxtoa (G«t 61b), Ludy Norali (8«t Mb) Silence (8«t Olb), and Salisbury (7stolb); time 3min (J 2-atheeo. Ho oleo won tlie Railway Stakes, 6 furlong, with bet lib, in lmin 15 2-6thece. He cannot complain of his weight. Sultau, when well, is a colt, but I hardly fancy he is capable «f carrying Bst 121b to victory. Son-of-n-Gun has Aown very little to gauge him by with 08t 51b. He ran eecond to Manton in tho N.Z. Cup. Hilda (Sat 31b) ism good filly when well. She won tho Auckland Ijuineas. the Princo of Wales Handicap, mlks, with 7«t 71b, in 2min and the SpriiV Handicap, with Bet 01b, at the Auckkßd spring meeting.. At the Auckland summer meeting, with tst ~lb, ran Moond to Lochiel (Sit 1 Olb) in tho Auckland Cup 2 mile*; iimo, 3imn J2seo. Ban third in tho Derbj, won by Cuirassier, Manton being eecond. She then won the Grand Stand Handicap on the third day. AfctheA.ii.C. autumn meeting, what, I believe, she was not (pite hewelf, she, wiln Bst 21b, ran third in tlio •Easter Handusap (Ia miles) to Leorina (7st) and Leopold (/st 7l'b) was second to Cuirassier in tho St. Leger, and (with 7rt 111b) was second to Leopold (7et ICib) in tho Autumn Handicap (Ih miles). Should I continue tho list on at this rate, I fihould occupy too much space, bo must curtail my remarks. Springstou, Silvermai-W, and Wolverine havektoly been ehrouded in darkness. Whimper (/at UU>; has a weight she is well able to carry. &he ie fast enough, if she can stay tho distance. Apropes (7et 121b) I doubl being ablo to stay. Exchange (7st 12lb) is » colt I have a mreat fancy for. Last year, with Ost, he «S third in tho N.Z. Cup, the boy not befojj able to hold him. Hu led oi tho ■wfandnm himself out. British Lion, ■Occident, Must Head, and Gipsy Prince ,have all more than they arc entitled to. Merrie England is a colt I have a groat reepect forl the weight, (Ist 81b) should not -.trouble him. Cojcunu.* is anothtr good colt,

if he can stay. St. Clare and Vandal are, I think, both held safe by Lady Norah, who has only 7sl; 61b. She is on paper tho brat treated one in the list. Space will not allow me to continue tho list further this week, but I will do so next. I have received a report of the committee of tho Wnnganui Jockey Club, with tho balanco-sheet for the year. The receipts show a substantial advance on those of last year. The total receipts for the year were £3806 18s 7d, as against £3369 13s for ISB7-8. This year the receipts were £695 10s 10d over the expenditure, which, after paying off the left balance of last year £257 os Bd, leaves a credit balanoe of £438 5s 2d. The Club are to be congratulated upon their success. I have also received the Canterbury Jockey Club's programmo for the season 18S9-90, very neatly got up in book form. I believe that the conference meeting of representatives from tho different Metropolitan Clubs will meet in Wellington next waek, when, no doubt, they will cause somo suggestions to be made to tho Government for the regulation of the use of tho totalisator. The following is the result of the draw for the coursing All-aged Stakes, to be run on Wednesday next: — Kohinaraka meets Kate Kelly White Rose meets Lancaster Romeo meets Longlands Cauradzo meets Emperor Venus meets Red Rose Langlea meets Andy Tauwhera meets Archer Black Bean meets Ned Kelly Clio a byo Tho first dogs will bo in the slips at 9 a.m. sharp.
