The troubles of a teacher in the Northern settlements would be worth recording if an exhaustive account could be obtained. At the Board of Education last weok the chairman mentioned that one teacher hud applied to be removed, as he had done two years' service. When asked why he did not like the position, ho stated that tho people with whom ho lived were in humble circumstances ; in fnct, so poor that they had not a chnir in the houeo. Mr. Upton said, "I asked him where thoy sat on. He replied " Boxes ;" and further stated that though he had a room to himself there was not even a chair in thut. He was asked why he had not purchased a chair for his special use, when the teacher replied that freight was so dear to such a place that he had not cared to go to tho expense, and had lived on in thu hopes of being removed. The Board considered the matter, and decided that two years on a box was quite enough at a time, and accordingly transferred the teacher to another district, where it is to be hoped at least one chair will bo at his disposal. Another unfortunate was selected to serve a term in this Northern pioneer settlement, and it really would bo as well for his pupils at the school he leaves to present him with a folding chair.—Auckland Star.
