Gisbobne, This day CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
Lately the police have been bringing- up numerous cases of cruelty *o animals. The other day R. M. Steggall, a well-known country publican, was fined £8 for allowing a decrepit )ioreo to stay in a bog two days without food and water, or endeavoring to extricate it. To-day four cases of cruelty were heard. Three contractors' horses bad been worked with severe wounds on the shoulders, one having an old scar re-opened Jive inches by three inches and a quarter of an inch deep. The fiuo in that case was £2, and in tho others £1. FIRE BRIGADES' COMPETITION. A torchlight procession of Fire Brigades will be held on Thursday night. It is not expected that the Napier men will be in time. The Gisborne firemen have been undergoing hard training. They are very swift, but their work is rather faulty in the big events. BOROUGH VALUATIONS. Tho borough properly tax valuations is £332,000. The annual value of tho borough is £30,500.
