UNDEEthe heading of "An Extraordinary Story, ' an Australian paper publishes the following cablegram under the date of London, 24th September :—" An extraordinary story is reported from tho United btnteß. A whaler has brought to Brooklyn a letter written by Captain Green, of the Confederation, a vessol which sailed from New York to Australia in 1858, and which foundered in the Pacific. It seems that after being 40 days in the boats a party of 16, two of whom were women, who escaped from the wreck, landed at tho island of Ojeo. Eight of the party were afterwards lost in trying to intercept n. passing vessel. Captain Green states in his letter that the party has increased to 12, and that they aro greatly in want of clothes." There was not much romance in the version of that cablegram which was published in New Zealand as follows:—"The captain of a whaler reports that the ship Confederation, from Now York to Australia, with fiftyeight passengers on board, foundered in the Pacific. After forty days privations in boats survivors to the number of 16 only, including 2 women, landed on tho island of Ojee. Eight of them afterwards lost their lives, trying to intercept a passing vessel." We have had some extraordinary errors in cable messages, but it will even puzzle tho Press Association authorities to improve on the abovo.
