The following appears in Messrs kelson Bros , London circular, dated 11th August: •' W e mentioned in our last report that in a few instances Canterbury sheep had made M per lb. but the general average of New Zealand mutton was ild. Since that time there has been a rise of nearly Id per lb. The principal reason for tliis improvement has, of course, been the small stocks and the limited shipments advised us coming forward : but, ut the same time, the supplies of home-killed and Contineut.il mutton have beeu very short. Fortunately the stocks of frozen mutton have been in two or three hands only, co that the market lian been carefully ted. Sales have necessarily been restricted, but a very satisfactory business has been done. Tho arrival of the Arawa and Tongariro, with only 21,000 carcases between th«sin, should not materially aileet Bviees. There is no doubt that these cargoes will be easily disposed of before tho end of the month, when the Fifeshire and Aahk-igli Biook are due. The eeason'w supply of Continental mutton is now, however, coming forward in increased qiumtitkvs : and remembering how closely tliLs meiit competed with frozeu mutton last yenr, il is doubted if present high prices will be maintained. We are advised that the. Duteli and German stocks are not so large us at this tune last year: m> if the London market is not pivM>.-d with thc-e consigiiineiits, only a moderate reduction should take place fur wmie time to I'ome.
