23—Kiwi, 5.8., from Wellington tia the coaet.

Tho s.s. Wairoa returned to port last night, bringing several passengers. The s.s. Ahuriri returned last night from Waimarama, having successfully landed all her cargo. The Hawko's Bay Shipping Company's barquentine Pcndlc Hill arrived from Newcastle- at 4 o'clock this morning, and was towed in later on by the Ahuriri to a berth at the breastwork, where she will commence this afternoon discharging her cargo, consisting of 3(58 tons of screened Co-operative coal, consigned to Messrs Cranby and Prebble. Captain Widerstrora, Into of the Alary Wadloy, is in «omnuiiid, and reports having left Newcastle on the 2nd inst; experienced fresh S.E. breeze and squall for tho first few days, after which light easterly; reached tho Straits on the loth, and met with strong S.E. winds with squalls, which detained her in Blind Bay for three days; off Capo Pnlliser on 21st got strong southerly breeze, which brought her off Bare Island at noon yesterday ; thence to arrival battling wind and calm. The Fondle Hill is a handsome addition to our locally-owned fleet, and from her smart appearance, wo venture to predict some very rapid passages under circumstances at all favorable. She was built at Sunderland in 1878 by Messrs John Blumcr And Co. Her gross register tonnage is 222, with a frame of iron, clincher built, and decks of wood. She is admirably adapted for this trade, as instanced by her present loading of 308 tons of coal on a draught of lift 2in aft, and 10ft lOin forward, which allowed her to como alongside the wharf without lighter-

The s.s. Kiwi, Captain James Campbell, arrived this morning from Wellington via Castlo Point and Cape Tumngrain. She is now discharging at. tho breastwork, and will steam for Wellington, Kaikouru, unci Lytteltnn at 3 p.m.

The s.s, Kahu landed cargo at Matnikuna yesterday, and is working Akiteo to-day. She should reach here cither to-night or tomorrow morning.

Tho Australia is duo early to-morrow morning from northern ports, and is announced to steam for Wellington at 3 p.m.

During the last month there has, up to the present, been more or less of a sea running in the b.iy, and the effect on the shinglo him beenrnost, noticeable. The large bank inside the Eastern Pier has completely disappeared, while the denudation behind tin; Nitvals' shed has been going on steadily. Mr lira eft informs us that when coining in from the Bayley yesterday he noticed a bank—the top of which was high and dry— forming at the back of the freezing works, on the same spot as the old " Kangatira Ba»k " used to furru in the old days before tho piers wore, run out, since which nothing has been seen of it. This will probably furnish a solution as to where tho shingle has been accumulating.

The Buylcy is proceeding rapidly with her loading, and will steam this evening for Lvttcltiin.

The s.s. Ohau is due here from southern porta to-morrow forenoon, and will be tendered in the roadstead for her cargo. Sho ■will steam in the afternoon for Gisborne, Tauranga, and Auckland.

The Zcalandia Arrived at Sydney yesterday from New Zealand, and the Wakatipu left the former port for this colony.
