There was no criminal business at tho R.M. Court this morning.

Mr J. P. Oliver, resident agent of the Government Insurance, has drawn out two ingeniously designed diagrams showing a comparison of the different items of receipts, disbursements, and funds accumulated, with the total incomes of seven life assurance offices in Australasia, aud a further comparison of ninety-six British and thirty American offices with tho New Zealand Government Insurance office These dingrams aro circular in form, and colored, enabling anyone at a glanco to observe without the aid of figures the various points of interest botwoon tho several offices mentioned.

" Hans the Boatman" last night drew a crowded audience to tho Theatre Royal. The Pit md stalls were crowded nearly half an hour beforo tho raising of tho curtain, and money was refused from that time on. In the circle there was not ii vacant seat, while a good many had to stand during tho evening. Mr Arnold confirmed tho good opinion expressed of him yesterday, and the more that playgoers see of him tho better they like him. That holds good generally of the piece and the plavera, and both Jell' and Yank were warmly applauded time .tfter time, whilo Mr Stuart was favored now and again by being hissed, the only compliment a stago villain can expect. Tho two infant prodigies were as attractive an ever, and there wero many children among tho audience who apparently would have liked to have joined the merry band on the stage. Mr Kuster at tho second interval repeated his Kuccossful solo of the previous evening. "Hans tho Boatman" will be repeated to-night and to-morrow evening.

Considerable excitement was caused in to'vn last night by the report that the North British and Fawko's Bay Freezing Company's works at tho Spit wero ou lire. IlieSpit Firo Brigade hud communicated with tho Napier Brigade station, und everything was in readiness to proceed to the port. The Spit Brigade, having a practice at tho time, went promptly to tho scene of the lire, when it was discovered that "Tommy's boiirding-houso" was in flumes. ihe building is some littlo distance from the freezing works, and being only a shell was quickly destroyed. A correspondent in Melbourne sends us (Post) tho following ;—Visitors to tho New Zealand Mineral Court simply ridicule it, its aspect being mournful and museumliku in tho extreme. Two apparently largo tombstones, v few yellow crock puddiiiir dishes containing ore, .several oases of nuartz samples, ii stand badly equipped with "a few Who boulders of quartz", and that is tho imprcHtiion with which the visitor leaves tho show. Tho adjacent Maori figures, or gods us they aro thought to by, and •' Footprints of the Moa," on tho side wall of tho Mineral Court, near one of tho tombstones, imparts an ancient Mcthusaleh-liko aspect to tho New Zealand Mineral Court. Tho t-.HnbstoncK bear no inscription or label, but on close inspection appear to be intended as an improved map or tablet showing the configuration ef New Zealand. J thus a funeral aspect, and on glancing round at tho iiiou'h feet and Maori figures, one is almost in-in)!uene<j.-.l to think it typiuul of the graves of departed iiboi'iginal.s, anil that tlie Maori ligurus and lnim'fi feet have been recently dug out of the volcanic nnul at Taruwora. An extremely bad inipr:',';-iion is created by thtj opening t-liotv "f the mineral court of New Zealand, which has a paltry elans of exhibits, and thesu poorly displayed. A New .South Walcw exhibitor oll'orod to lend Now Zealand a few tons of quart/ to build up ii reliiniii <ji- two of mineral ore like their ' own and other courts have erected, showing to advantage material from the gold and silver producing lodes of Australia. In front of the Ni:\v Zealand Court, quite apart l'rom the reht of the mineral exhibils, is a cojunm showing the total gold jimiluood, but for want: of an inscription oven tho effect of this (now out of date) trophy is lost, a.s tho few who notice it at till attribute it to Queensland, the adjacent court.

Those who sympathise with Dr. Salmond in his endeavor to widen out tho creeds of to-day will find some proof of the track of current thought in the following :—A notable incident took place in Edinburgh Established Presbytery on Monday, 21st May, 1888, in connection with tho licensing of several students of divinity. On the question being put whether the candidates owned the whole doctrino of tho Confession as the confession of their faith, they askpd if an affirmativo answer would be taken to mean a literal adhesion to every clause of the Confession. As the Presbytery appeared to evade tho question by replying that they wcro not there to interpret the Confession, several of the students declared that they could only assent on the understanding that they were not bound to the literal interpretation. Under those conditions they signed the formula, and were greatly cheered by the spokesman of the Presbytery declaring, in his charge to them, that they wero not expected to adopt every jot and tittle, but rather the spirit of the Confession.
