There is not a public performer of tiny sort that is not eager for applause, and looks ou approvingly when his efforts aro being warmly received. If that be a rifriit of tho paving public they aro equally within their rights to condemn that of which they do not approve. Encores to many are a terrible nuisance, for very frequently they are not deserved, and are either duo to "the persistent noisiness of a few individuals who seem to think thoy will never get enough for their money, or to the fact that tho performer's friends aro determined that ho or she must be distinguished by a recall. Last night Mr Akers showed execrable taste by stopping in tho middle of an Italian air because some of the audience wcro talking, and later on a funeral march failed to please two or three noisy individuals, and then tho player rose and left the piano. Now Mr Akers was not responsible for tho malcontents not being satisfied, but ho had no reason on his side when he punished tho ninety and nine for the error of the ono, and it was setting an example which we hope never to see followed. An audience who had paid to hear a particular programme should not. be punished because two or three may bo objectionable.
