Fire.

The alarm bell was then rung and Mr Yuill, tho station -keeper, with the distance of the mghtwatohman. and some willing volunteers ran out the hose-reels. rSderablo delay then occurredl before water was obtained, although Mr Brophj, ™O borough turncock, had turned on both high and low pree-UK* with commendable promptitude Wh«..tho water did begin to play the fire had got ft Zd hold of Mr NaphtnliV pawnbroker's eUop, and Mr Goodwin's butcher « shop. It w is evident that all three were doomed to desteuction. By this time, however there W a strong muster of firemen, and some r p pearance of organised operations to conquer the fire quickly told upon tho names. Ihe hpit brigade arrived on the ground at about quarter to two o'clock, and it was not till flien that the steam fire onginp was set limping. The complete extinction of the Ire was then but the work of a few minutes, and by 2 a.m. all danger was over. A word of praise is due to tho Fire Pol.cc who not only mustered quickly, but did good salvage service. milm-Wi B Tho insurances arc :-Mr Colledgx ? building ie owned by Mr H. Williams, and insured for £200 in tho Victoria office. The •tookwas insured for £1000 m the bouth British, half of which risk was re-insme, £250 in the Imperial, and ±200 in to Phoenix. A large proportion of tho stock in wB believe injured. MeSe Naphtali's andGoodwin's premises areownedbv the New Zealand Insurance Company which rune its own risk. Mr NaXli'B stock was insured in tho Norwich Union for £390.
