In reference to tho Melbourne Exhibition, we would remind intending visitors that excursion fares from Napier by tho Union Company's steamers commence with

tho Rotomahana from Napier on Saturday next. Tho stoiiiner is timed to nrrivo in Melbourne on the 2Gth inst., so that excursionists will havo a week to look nround the great metropolis* before tho opening day of the great world's fair.

In its account of tho accident to Samson M'Whinney, on tho Weatherstones road on Sunday, the Tuapoka Times says:— " Ho appeared to bo under the influence of liquor, and not at all secure in tho saddle ; but, doubtless", would have reached his haven securely had ho not tried to jump his horee over a cow which was standing on

ttio sido of the road. Tho horse turned a clean somersault, throwing the rider with great force on the crown of his head, and rolling over him into tho bargain. The only thing about tho unfortunate fellow that was not injured was a bottle of whiskey whtch he had in his pocket."

A peculiar action was tried in Sydney last week. Mr J. H. Want, tho well-known barrister, claimed £500 from S. A. Moss and wifo, lessees of tho Theatre Royal, as compensation for the actiou of the defendauts in depriving him of tho exclusive rights of a dress-circlo opera box, which ho alleges was convoyed to him in writing by the late Samuel Lazar in 1881. This right to the exclusive use to the box for the rest of Lazar's lease was given in consideration of the profits derived from tho business. The written conveyance had boon lost or acoidcntly destroyed, but the plaintiff and others gave evidence as to its contents. Tho jury found for the plaintiff, but a legal question was reserved for tho Full Court.

Owing to thos.s. Maitai having to return to Westport, thero will bo no steamer for Gisbomo and Auckland till Saturday.
