THE CABLE QUESTION

In the House last night, in replying to the question, 1; Whether, in view of the prudent interruption of Port DarwinBanjoowangi cables, tho Government had taken into consideration the. proposal for the construction of tho Pacific cable, and als<*> whether the Governiiient would, in coujunction with thb other Australasian colonies, grant assistance to oxpedito a huvvey of the route with further surveying ships beyond the Egeria ?" Sir Henry Parkc.!** stated that the expediency of taking up the construction of the cable from Vancouver had not been under tho consideration of tho Cabinnt, and ho further mentioned that no action would bo taken by the Government without tho sanction of Parliament. RIFLE SHOOTING. The House has passed a voto of .£IOO to be devoted to riflo matches to be held during the time the Exhibition is opou. SENTENCE COMMUTED. Tho seutence of death passed on Michael O'Shea at tho Boechworth assizes, for murdering his son, hns been commuted by tho Governor, as it has been ascertained that accused was not responsible for his action, and the medical gentlemen have reported that ho is insane.
