The latest idea in cablegrams thanks to the Press Association consists not in tolling us what won, but what did not win. In the Royal Stakes at iSydney we are told neither Mitrailleuse nor Cinderella were "placed; it might have been less expensive and a little more interesting to say who did win.

On tho 9th January last a Scandinavian named Peter Jensen, living on the West Coast, and employed by one of tho Wost Coast Harbor Boards, made a proposal for insurance. He was examined on tho 14th January, and on the 18th of the same month he was killed, "his proposal having iv tlie meantime been necopted . No premium had been paid on it in cash, but only the verbal underti king was made that it would bo paid in due course. Of courso thero wua. no legal clflim on the Department, which could havo taken advantage of tho technicality, *nd ignored tho proposal. However, the Government Insurance authorities have proved themselves superior to meanness of this nature, and have now paid to the deceased's representatives, for the benefit of his widow nnd child, tho amount of the policy, namely, £200. Such liberalty and promptness should commend the Government institution to tho public, who will do well also to deduce a valuable lesson from Jensen's untimely fate in the full flush of health, and from tho contemplation of the assistance) this assurance money will bo to tho bereaved widow and orphan.

To the Editor: Sir,—By inserting tho following in your well circuhited paper you will do me a favor; and also enlighten the minds of thoso intending to leave Hawke's Bay, to tho true slate of affairs here. Tho township of Broken Hill is about us large as that of Hastings, only iustoad of it being good weather-boarded houses, tho greater portion is under' canvas; and, according to report, tho inhabitants number 14,000, bo you may judge from that, what amount of work there is left for strangers. Wngoa, when you do get work are ranch tlio same as those of Hawko's Bay. Mechanics can earn about 10s per day, and laborers Bs. Board and lodging are very dear ; tho best hotels charge £3 per week, and tho cheapest in the town is 25s per week. Water is very scarce: it costs 4d per gallon, and is bad at that. It cannot be used for drinking purposes without being boiled first. If you uso it without boiling you are liable to dysentery. Then there are tho dust storms, which are very bad. When they are on you cannot see a half-dozon yards before you, and for about 200 miles around it is nothing , but sand. There is not a blade of grass or a green tree to bo seen, only a lot of stunted salt-bush consequently horses and cattle suffer a groat doal. Those that now come hero from 11.8. cannot say they came in ignorance. Hoping you will give this publicity, lam, &c, G. Williams. Broken Hill, May 10th.

Tho Waipawa Mail has lately been posing in a new line, namely as a saint among newspapers. In order to maintain this goody-goody style it has to misrepresent its contemporaries, aud then it pours forth such effusions by way of reprimand as make it appear ridiculous.—Woodville Examiner.

Threo individuals who drank the Queen's health yesterday in pewters, which, must undoubtedly have contained too much intoxicating liquor, appeared before the R.M. this morning to answer to the charge of drunkenness.. William Storey said ho took a " nip " for tho occasion. There were throe previous oonvictione., and on this occasion the R.M. fined him £1 with costs, in default 7 days' imprisonment with hard labor. Percy Huntloy, similarly charged, had a like exeneo. It was holiday gtiaio, and ho had kad a drop in commemoration of tho birthday ©f Her Majesty. The R.M. gave him somo cheap advice, and told him not to drink his sovereign's health so many times. Ho would be dismissed with a caution.—John Roach said he was drunk. He kept up tho holiday. Somebody started knocking him about at tho Spit, but he didn't laiow ' who tho person was. Hβ was asked for os with costs, or the alternative of 48 hours' | imprisonment with hard labor. j Tho following are to-dny's mercury wadings:—Russell 54, Auckland 56, Thames 68, Cambridge 58, Tauranga 52, Taupo47, Gisborno 43, Now Plymouth 53, Wauganui 51, Wellington 45, Blenheim 40, Nelson 45, Gre-ymouth 47, Hokitika 47, Bealy 28, LytloHon 35, Tiraaru 47, Oaruaru 4(5," Port Chalmers 46, Dunedin 44, Clyde 38, Queenstown 35, Balclutha 35, Invercargill 32, Napier 43, and.Bluff 40. A correspondent writes as follows:—"It is really sad to see so many men looking for work and iinding none. It is all vory well to say if theso men were steady and willing to work they need not be on the tramp. I beliovo moro than two-thirds of them aro steady, and, probably, all of them. Wo get nine or ten every night for supper, bed, and breakfast, and then they go on their weary journoy." We unintentionally did Mr H. Hill, Inspector of Schools, an injustice in classing him with teachers and inspectors who insist upon the importances of Bonding infants to schools. Mr Hill has ulways maintained JJiat infants in our public schools seriously Impair tho efficiency of our educational system; and it is his opinion that no child should be sent to school until he had arrived at tho age of seven years.
