PREPARING FOR WAR.
ATTACK ON LONDON" IMPOSSIBLE,
SPECIAL TO PEESS ASSOCIATION.—OOPYIUOHT.]
(Received May 10, 11 p.m.)
: London, May 9. A deputation of members of Parliament that waited on Mr Stanhope urged that the country should be placed in a proper state of defence. Mr Stanope, in replying , ! said the country had confidence in Lord Wolseley and Major-G-eneral Sir Redvers Bailer, who were paying close attention to the matter. A sufficient sum had, he said, been placed on the estimates to carry out tho defence of the ports'and coaling stations. The defence of the leading mercantile ports was almost complete as intended, and he thought an attack on London by means of the Thames was impossible. The scheme for mobilising tho army was being proceeded with and was rapidly approaching completion. Tho home defence would, he said, greatly depend on the patriotism and intelligence of the Volunteers. Their numbers were adequate, and the only disadvantage under which they would suffer would be from incomplete preparation. :
