Tiik Gazette contains the amended conditions for tho reward of £10,000 for the discovery, of a now goldfield. The conditions tire:—l. Tho maximum sum offered as a reward for any proved discovery of new goldfields in accordance with these conditions is £5000 for tho North Island, and £5000 for the Middlo Island. 2. The newly-discovered goldfield must bo situated not less than forty miles from any existing goldfield, or .any existing workings. 3. No reward shall be payable until 50,000 ounces of gold have been produced from the newly-discovered goldfield within three years from tho date of its boing registered. No prospecting to be made on native lauds without tho couscnt of the owners. Now, it will occur to many to ask tho quoslion why should a reward of this kind be restricted to tho discovery of a goldfield 'i We are not at all sure that a goldfield is an un-

mixed blessing, while we are quite certain that other mining.industries may be of far more value to the country. It may be said that there is j more money in copper, and silver than in gold, for less capital is required for their extraction, and fewer people sink their all in tlie vain endeavor to haste to be rich through their means than through a quartz reef. If all the money could be counted that has been spent in bringing gold to the surface, it would be found that it has cost much more than it was worth.
