At the Taranaki races yesterday the Novel Race was won by Merlin. Silence was unsuccessful in the Taranaki J.C. Handicap, being beaten by Tamora and Dudu Tong-ariro also started. Tamora jumped away with the lead antl was never collavcd. Dudu ran a good second. Silence was well up third, but his heavy weisrht (9st 51b) told against him. In the second lap Tongariro pulled up lame. Time, 3min 44 jsec; dividend, .£2 3s. Cinderella won the Flying Handicap very cleverly by half a length from Recluse, Ruf us third. At Oamaru the Oamaru Handicap was won by Trapper, Jaokall and Tho Brewer filling the places. Bella appropriated the Trotting Race, Jackall the AVaitaki Handicap, and St. John the Welter Hurry Scurry.
