The exodus to Australia, of which so much is being- made by certain journals, is a very small thing. From 1880' to 1887 the excess of births over deaths in New Zealand totalled

107,000, which is a much higher proportional Grain than any other colony can show. It caniiot be too often stated that our population increases rapidly, owing to our deathrate being lower than any colony of the group. During those eight years wo received from Victoria 25,370 while those leaving our snores numbered 29,872. During the first five years tbo balance was in our favor, but the last three years, which havo been years of plenty in Victoria, while with us they have been years of depression, the tide turned, and the figures are as stated. On the other hand, Now South Wales only sent us 27,239 people, while she drew away 32,720 from us, so that tho tendency of tho people of Now Zealand, when they leave a Protectionist colony, is to g-o to one that approaches Free Trade, which should convey to us a lesson. We freely admit that tho figures aro not absolutely correct, because people leaving Dunedin or Invercargill for New South Wales would book for Melbourne, while those belonging to Auckland desirous of settling in Victoria would go ria Sydney. Tbe two would balance each other approximately, so that wo who have a class advocating Protection find that those who leave our shores seek a home where trade is unrestricted, and where they have full liberty to buy and sell in any market they choose.
