FIRES AT MAKARETU.

Information was received here on Saturday afternoon that an extensive fire had aIso occurred at central Makaretu. It appears that fires had been burning for several weeks in the new block between Makaretu and the Ruahine Range, and on Friday afternoon the hurricane carried the fire into the middle of the settlement, where it spread with great rapidity. Franz Berkahn's house and contents, together with the outbuilding were destroyed. Fortunately he had sent off sixty bags of grass-seed the

day before. He was insured with the National £130. His property is not far from the school. Another settler named Rasmussen was entirely burnt out, but I am not aware whether he was insured or not.
