A little girl named Eva Palmer, seven years of age, was run over shortly after noon by a spring cart driven by a Chinaman. She had a miraculous escape, and got oft with a badly bruised ankle. Tho accident occurred iv Emerson-street.
The privileges in connection with tho Napier Park Racing Club meeting were passed in to-day at auction, but very high prices were realised for them privately.

The vagaries of two new chum selectors are greatly amusing their more experienced fellow settlers up in the bush. These young fellows recently took up a section tiear Ekctahuna between them. Their first trouble was the mosquitos. Various absurd remedies were suggested by sympathising friends, all of which were tried oven to the use of the world-renowned Mather's fly papers and the oxplosion of dynamite cartridges, while a system of mosquito nets something after the style of ilio much talked of rabbit fences wens resorted to, and- jnosquito netting by the mile figured iv their orders to their storekeeper. Their idea of bush tiring , , too, is very primitive. They felled their bush within a week of burning , it, with the result that only the leaves were consumed and now they are busy logging up, and, as an after thought, arc lopping oft the brandies. Their last trouble is the procuration of grass seed, but they have met this difficulty very happily, and are engaged gathering soft ! meadow grass from the roadsides under the fond impression that it is cocksfoot, The neighbors say nothing. They look on, sweetly smile, and think of the future of that clearing.—Wairarapa Daily.
