The following gentlemen were yesterday elected without opposition the Licensing Committee for the Woodville district:— Messrs W. F. Knight, A. MoKay, J. H. Monteith, Lewis Phillip, and H. Shannon. They will hold their first meeting on 24th inst.
A petition is being , extensively signed, at the instance of the Maharahara Road Board, by the ratepayers interested in that district, iv favor of ;i ioau of £1000 under the Local Bodies' Loans Act, to bo expended in forming and metalling the several roads. The Danevirke races, which should have been held to-day, have been postponed till Saturday, on account of the contiuued wet weather.
It is a blessing for people to bo settled in a township laid out by Government, for thereafter thoy aro treated most paternally, and get almost all they ask for. Thus block 1, Ormondville township l."> acres or.'i Op., bounded on the north by the R.tugiora steam, and a really pretty plaoo ; also "» acres, big section lo block IX., Takapau Survey District, ln<ve been granted as a recreation ground. Waipawa, being a speculator's township, never reaps auy of these favors.
A concert was given hero last night for the benefit of the Waipawa Cricket Club. The houso was not a good one by any means, and the programme was of too sombre a character which might have something to do with tho absence of many. Tho exquisite and artistic singing of the Misses Largo and Jones were tho salvation of the whole concern. Tho Orchestral Society opened with an overture. 3fr Grould sang '■ Will-'o-thy-Wwp " (which was encored, but not roponded to), joined in a duct with Miss Large, and gave •' The Diver." Miss Jones sang " When Sparrows Build," and being encored, she gave "Jock O'ilawlddenn," and later gave n really humorous duet on " Money Matters " in company with her brother. Miss Large gave " When Bee and Bird Arc Singing," which gained a repeat; "The Fisherman s Daughter" was encored, when she gave '•I Love Thee"; "It W" s a Dream" being similarly favored, she sang "Home Love." Mrs Price, a visitor from Poraugahau, sang " Juumta" and " Homo They Brought Her Warrior Dead. ' Mrs Worboys <'avo " The Slave Chase." Mr John T MHornsby gave " You Get More Like vo'ur J>ud," applauded Mr A. E. Jiill reeeivfd i>. similar compliment iur " \Vrap Me Up," illl d ho also gave a recitation " Fraucessa" from Bret Harte. Mr M'Vuy g'ivo " The Fisherman and His Child.'" Mr John T. M. Hornsby gave a rending " Itupert's Head " by G. 11. Sims. Mr Loughnan gave the accompaniments to most of the songs. Tho Patanguta County Council holds its quarterly meeting to-day.
