The weather for the first day's racing of tho Victoria Racing Club's autumn meeting was splendid, and there was a capital attendance. Sir Henry Loch, Governor of Victoria, and Lord Carrington, Governor of New South Wales, were amongst those present. The course was fast. The feature of tho racing was the success of the Hon. J. White, whose string secured the first four events. The riding of Hales was much admired. The following were the results :— KSSENDON STAKES, Of 5 soys each, with 250 added ; second, 50 soys; and third, 25 soys. Weight for age. One mile and a quarter. Hon. J. White's Carlyon, 3yrs, by Chester .. .. .. .. 1 Major George's eh h Nelson, aged ~ 2 Mr S. G. Cook's b b Cyclops, oyrs .. 3 Only tho three started. Betting at the post 5 to 1 on Nelson. Nelson led until coming into tho straight, when Carlyon came to the front and won by a short length. Time, 2min 10§soc. ASCOT VALE STAKES. A sweepstake of 20 soys. each, 5 ft., with 650 added ; the second horse to receive 130 soys.; and the third 65 soys. out of the stake. For2yrs.old—coifs, Sst 101b, fillies, Sst 71b. Geldings at time of running allowed olb. The winner of any race (not a handicap) value 100 soys. to carry 71b extra ; of 200 soys. 101b extra ; upwards 14lb extra. Three-quarters of milo.

Volley held a prominent place throughout the race, and at tho distance took command, and won by three lengths. Consequence and Wycombe ran a dead heat for third place. Time, lmin 16jsec.

A sweepstake of 2.5 soya. each, with 375 added; the second horse to receive 50 soys., and tho third 25 soys: out of the stake. For three-year-olds, colts Rst 101b ; fillies, Sst 71b, geldings allowed 51b.' Ono mile aud three quarters and 132 yards. Hon. J. White's Abercorn, by Chester .. .. .. .. .. 1 Mr W. Gannon's Australian Peer, by Darebin .. .. .. .. .. 2 Hon. W. A. Long's Moorhousc, by Moorethorpe .. .. .. ~ 3 —Niagara and Enfilade also started.

Betting at tho post was as follows : 7 to 4 against Abercorn, 5 to 2 Australian Peer.

Enfilade led all the way round past the turn into the straight, but was passed by Australian Peer at tho distance post; Abereorti at the same time camo fast, and by tho excellent judgment of Hales, his jockey, caught tho leader. A fine race ensued down tho straight, Abercorn winning by a length, and Moorhouse beating Enfilade ou tho post for third place. Time, omiu l.V]sec.

Betting at the start —7 to I against Centaur, 8 to 1 Cranbrook, 10 to 1 Lord Allen and Mitrailleuse, 12 to 1 Mozart, 14 to 1 Tho Queen, Victim, and Torpedo, 15 to 1 Chicago, 25 to 1 Tho Charmer.

Owing to the fractious temper of several horses some delay occurred at the nost and several false starts were made. Eventually tho field were got off well together, Master John being the first to get away, with Torpedo, Lord Allen, Pomona, Mitrailleuse, Ben Bolt, Mozart, My Lord, and Cranbrook in close order as his nearest attendants. When tho rails were reached Ben Bolt had run to the head of affairs, with Mitrailleuse at his (jirths, closely followed by Victim, My Lord, Lord Allen, Boz, and Cranbrook. At tho ton Victim and The Charmer appeared prominently in the van, but at the distance Cranbrook, who was in tho middle of the course, was seen forging his way to tho front, and in a few strides assumed the lead. Hales then gave the son of Chester his head, and he won in a canter by three lengths, Lord Allen a length and a half in front of Victim. The others finished as follows :~Epieurean fourth, Boz, fifth, Chicago sixth, South Melbourne seventh, and The Charmer eighth. Escutcheon was last to pass the post. Time, lmin 14*seo, which was the, fastest time on record for this race,

Wyvis maintained tho lead until nearing the judge's box, when Forest Quoon camo with a rush and succeeded in making the result a dead heat, Time, lmin. -Usee. In tho run off $Wost Queen won by half a length,

Lava was in front upon entering the straight, but died away at the half distance. Mentor took advantage of the leader's collapse and jumped forward, winning by two lengths. Time, 2min. Sisec. The racing on tho wholo was against the ring. Cranbrook was largoly backed straight out and in doubles. It is reported that £100,000 obauged hands over the Newmarket Handif-ap. Tho Hon. J. Whito is also expected to oarrv off tho Australian Cup.
