The sum of :CIi3,G2S was spent last year under the head of subsidies to local bodies for providing work for unemployed, and there were outstanding liabilities up to the loth November of £21,235. The largest expenditure was at Christchureh whore over £9000 was spent in improving Hagley Park and Domain, in levelling the Small-pox .Hospital Reserve, and in the formation of a new rifle-range. Forest planting in tho Auckland district absorbed £133, and the Dunedin boroughs spent £5,979. In addition to the £9031 expended in the benutifieation of Hagley Park, there are outstanding liabilities of £1880 on the same account. The good people of Christchureh should feel thankful at two birds having been brought down at one shot—the poor relieved, and the environs of the city made beautiful for ever.
